Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Lawrence Cartwright has called for the introduction of a contributory disaster relief insurance programme for farmers.
Cartwright said at the Gladstone Road Agriculture Research Centre.
Cartwright said the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources and the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation are committed to increasing the level of appreciation for Bahamian grown, processed and locally made commodities while deepening the awareness of consumers to the wide variety of products.
Minister Cartwright said that farmers in Exuma today have a “golden opportunity” because of the tourism product and the number of tourists who visit the island.
Lawrence Cartwright said the exposition will bring together producers of vegetables, root crops, fruits, ornamentals, food and drink manufacturers, livestock producers and marine resource harvesters from throughout The Bahamas to showcase their product lines.
Minister Cartwright said that students are another group to be targeted at the expo.
However, Cartwright says regional governments must give full support to the initiative because it will require more money to increase local agricultural production.
But with the figure expected to dip to four million this year as a result of the US financial crunch, Cartwright is adamant that the season is ripe to boost farm production.
The Honorable Lawrence Cartwright has deep within his soul a keen sense of the unlimited possibilities, appreciation and gratitude for what we can attain from our land.
