Minister-Delegate to the Prime Minister for the Promotion of Women, Family Well-Being, and Social Affairs Hawa Ahmed Youssouf of Djibouti

The Minister for Advancement of Women, Family Welfare and Social Affairs in Djibouti, Hawa Ahmed Youssouf is leading a campaign against her society which continues to practice female genital mutilation(FGM) – the surgical removal of the clitoris, so that girls cannot enjoy sexual relations.

Hawa Ahmed Youssouf has decided to speak out against the practice, bringing up the issue with the UNO and at international conferences on women’s rights.

Hawa Ahmed Youssouf is Djibouti's only female cabinet member, heading the Ministry for Advancement of Women, Family Welfare and Social Affairs since 1999.

Youssouf was briefing journalists in Lilongwe after meeting President Dr Bingu wa Mutharika at the New State House.
