A radio and television technician by training, Aigner has been a member of parliament in Berlin since 1998, specializing in education, research and agricultural affairs.
Prior to her appointment, Ilse Aigner chaired the Working Group on Education and Research of the CDU/CSU parliamentary party.

Aigner was appointed as Germanys new minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection after her predecessor Horst Seehofer was elected to become Prime Minister of the German state of Bavaria in the end of October.
