Inaugurating an international conference on Statistics and Programme Implementation, Vasan said although most farmers in India are small and marginal, they are the biggest investors in agriculture.
Addressing the conference at the Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee celebrations, Vasan said there is also a need to obtain estimates of production of important agricultural crops at gram panchayat level.
Mr Vasan said the subjects for the 64th Round were picked keeping in mind the priorities of Government and the objectives of the Eleventh Five Year Plan.
To formulate effective policies and programmes for eliminating poverty, Mr Vasan said the statistical system would need to provide a reliable database for estimating the incidence of poverty in different regions.
Vasan was reported to have virtually walked out of the meeting.
