KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 (AP) - (Kyodo)Indonesia Foreign Minister Noer Hassan Wirajuda said Sunday the recent arrest of 10 suspected Islamic militants in Indonesia has severely weakened the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network.
The plot to bomb the cafe is believed to have been aborted because the militants found they would have killed more Indonesians than foreigners, Wirajuda said The militants arrested included Singaporean Mohamed Hassan, an associate of Mas Selamat Kastari, another Singaporean who headed the Singapore JI cell.
Top is believed to be still in Sumatra, although Wirajuda said the authorities still do have no specific information.
Wirajuda said that as a Muslim country, Indonesia is proud of Iran's achievements in scientific and industrial fields, particularly in the field of peaceful nuclear technology.
Wirajuda said that his country is glad that it has not been Iran that has blocked the path for continuation of nuclear talks and sound logic.
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia, Jan 19 -- Indonesian officials plan to reopen negotiations with separatist rebels in Aceh by the end of this month, building on an informal truce that took hold after the province was battered by the tsunami last month, Foreign Minister Noer Hassan Wirajuda said Wednesday.
Though Wirajuda was guarded about the prospects for the talks, they would mark the first formal contacts between the government and the Free Aceh Movement since talks broke down in May 2003 and the Indonesian security forces launched a new offensive.
Making the remark in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki here Thursday, Wirajuda said all countries should underline the right of countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Wirajuda said his government was well aware of the important role Iran plays in strengthening peace in the Persian Gulf region.
