On 18 December 2008, Jetta Klijnsma was appointed state secretary of Social Affairs and Employment in the fourth government headed by Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.
At the age of 13 Jetta Klijnsma found herself in a rehabilitation centre learning to walk again after an operation on her legs.
