Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Mathias Chikawe of Tanzania

Minister Chikawe said Tanzania has lately participated in different UN peace keeping missions in conflict-torn countries in Africa and Middle East.
Mr Chikawe said in this financial year his ministry would finalize preparations of a Government notice with recommendations on the fund's establishment.
Mr Chikawe said the government recently recruited 157 state attorneys, after adoption of the new system where functions of prosecution and investigation have been separated – under which police are to carry out investigations while the Attorney General is charged with the role of prosecution.
Mr Chikawe said the government was keen on good governance in which the independence of the judiciary and respect of the rule of law were major tenets.
Mathias Meinrad Chikawe is a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Tanzania.
Appealing for patience, Minister Chikawe said the Government was studying the report before making a decision and Parliament will be notified on the decision.
Chikawe was emphasizing that contracts signed between the government and private companies in whatever sector will remain to be top secrets and classified.

Constitutional Affairs and Justice Minister Mathias Chikawe was responding to the question whether Tanzania had plans to abolish the death sentence in view of the fact that her neighbours had already done so.
Chikawe was responding to a basic question by Richard Ndasa (Sumve, CCM), who had asked the government to review death sentence and reduce it to life imprisonment because its implementation remained negligible for the last 47 years of Tanzania`s sovereignity.
DODOMA, 10 November 2006 (IRIN) - The Tanzanian government is reviewing the country's Marriage Act with the aim of raising girls' age consent for marriage from 15 to 18 years, Deputy Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Mathias Chikawe has said.
Minister Chikawe said he was unable to give comments because he was bed-ridden.
Chikawe said Tanzania had welcomed the establishment of the Universal Periodic Review mechanism and had accepted to undergo a review as slotted during the selection process.
