New laws are being drafted in a bid to improve worker accommodation, UAE labour minister Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash has said.

Once new regulations are announced, developers failing to meet the standards would face sanctions by the Ministry of Labour that could include fines or closure, although Mr Ghobash said it was too soon to announce what each level of punishment would be.

On a visit to Yas Island yesterday, Mr Ghobash said labour camps today were in a far better condition than they were in the past, thanks in part to Government action.

MANILA, Philippines — United Arab Emirates (UAE) labor minister Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash has assured Senate president pro tempore Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada that his office will protect the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) there.

UAE Minister of Labor Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash said he was optimistic that their pilot project in cooperation with the Philippine and Indian governments would motivate other Gulf countries to accord migrant workers with equal rights and benefits as local workers.

This can be a model that can be adopted by other countries in the Middle East," Ghobash said in an interview in Manila recently.

Saeed Ghobash had earlier said that the labour market in the UAE had a few problems such as delay in payment of wages and financial dues but the government was taking steps to solve them.
